Isa kang salot, halimaw!

Nararapat lamang na ika'y matupok

Sa apoy na galing sa nilikha mong ningas

Isang patibong na kikitil sa iyong buhay

There is a girl in my mirror...i wonder who she is?

Sometimes I think I know her...sometimes i really wish I did.

There's a story in her eyes...lullabyes and goodbyes

when she's looking back at me...I can tell her heart is broken easily

Cause the girl in my mirror is ME

I only slept for 3 hours, I woke up as early as 2:30am today. I am preparing for a midterm exam in my advanced statistics class for my Doctoral studies in UP Diliman scheduled today(february 18).So far this is my last academic subject and hope to write my dissertation after I passed my comprehensive exam this summer. But the big question is..."Will I get through it?"

This semester is a hell to me! I only got 1 subject in my PhD to finish and I was even deloaded for my teaching loads in the University where i am teaching yet I find it so hard to cope with my studies and my job. I have lots of backlogs and I don't have any idea on how I can overcome it.

For these past weeks, my mind is bothered with my coming midterm exam.Im have been quite quixotic because until now I can't understand the topics that i need to study for my exam.Bakit ba naman kasi ng magsabog and Diyos ng talino sa mathematics ay wala man lang akong nakuha ni kahit konti!

Here I am, I have been up for several hours now trying to read, comprehend and dissect the topics that seems so greek to me....time is running fast...I only got several hours more to go before the moment of truth!

I have to pass this exam...

I have to pass this exam...

I have to pass this exam....whaaaaah!!!

Currently reading: my thick books in statistics

Taxonomy is the science of classifying organisms. The most influential name in taxonomy is the great Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus, who developed the Linnean system of classification more than two centuries ago. It is a hierarchical system -- that is, each organism belongs to a series of ranked taxonomic categories, such as a subspecies, species, genus, family, etc. At any rank in the hierarchy any organism can belong to only one taxon, or taxonomic group. Each taxon is given a formal, latinized name that is recognized by scientists around the world. This ranking system originally reflected a view that animals did not evolve from any other lifeform and were endowed by their Creator with a specific rank in a hierarchy of life.  Generally, the Linnaean system works well, even though many aspects of it are arbitrary. For example, there is always vigorous debate whether an organism deserves to have its own genus, or should be merged with an existing genera.  Specific rules that control whether a taxon qualifies for a specific rank do not exist.

It is remarkable that although Linnaeus knew nothing about genetics or evolutionary theory, and believed that all species were fixed and could not change, his system of binomial classification has endured up to the present day.  Today, however, there is a growing need to correct its glaring shortcomings in light of new scientific evidence from evolution and genetics. There are several competing schools of thought vying for the superiority as the replacement for classical Linnaean taxonomy.

Phylogenetic Taxonomy groups animals based on ancestry, or phylogeny, with membership determined only by advanced characteristics. These groupings, called clades, are defined in two ways, either as an animal and all its descendants (a node-based clade) or as an animal and all animals sharing a more recent common ancestor with that animal than with another (a stem-based clade).   Clades are diagnosed by advanced characteristics that set them apart from their ancestors. For example, the clade including snakes is diagnosed by the disappearance of all limbs, an advanced characteristic compared to the primitive (for the clade Tetrapoda) characteristic of having all four limbs expressed. Clades are not family trees as the true ancestry of every animal would have to be known. Clades are hypotheses of ancestry, and are governed by the rules that govern all of science.
A closely related science to Phylogenetic Taxonomy is called Cladistics. Cladistics is the science of discovering and representing the most parsimonious distribution of advanced characteristics among taxa. Cladistics produces branching diagrams called cladograms. Cladistics is used to test phylogenetic hypotheses, as the distribution of advanced characteristics should mirror the taxa's phylogeny, and the resulting cladograms are often used to represent the hypothesized phylogeny. Phylogenetic Taxonomy and Cladistics are therefore often used synonymously, although technically they are two different disciplines.

There is also Evolutionary Systematics, also called Gradistic Taxonomy, which gives an a dynamic evolutionary slant to the static Linnaean system.  It is based on a combination of branching and divergence of evolutionary paths.  Evolutionary Systematics was formulated by Ernst Mayr and G. G. Simpson. .

“Nothing, for Example, is more difficult than to convince the merely general reader that the fact of sixes have been thrown in a succession by a player at dice is sufficient cause for betting the largest odds that sixes will not be thrown in the third attempt.  A suggestion to this effect is usually rejected by the intellect at once. It does not appear that the two throws which have been completed, and which lie now absolutely in the Past, can have influence upon the throw which exist only in the future. The chance for throwing the sixes seems to be precisely as it was any ordinary time---that is to say, subject only to the influence of the various other throws which may be made by the dice. And this is a reflection which appears so exceedingly obvious that attempts to controvert it are received more frequently with a derisive smile than with anything like respectful attention.”

                                                     --- Edgar Allan Poe’s

                                       “The Mystery of Marie Roget.”

I agree with this quoted statement. Sometimes, people would leave everything that is happening in their life to chance and some people would also tend to be stuck up with certain patterns or events that are happening in our life and trying to predict their future or luck through those patterned events.

Most people tend to believe that luck is always connected with the past events that have already happened. Take for example a couple who wanted to have a son, but unluckily they are always blessed with daughters. Couples who are unaware of the principle of probability will keep on producing children until they have a son ending up frustrated and with a dozen of daughters to raise. Sometimes couples would think that since they are already able to produce 5 daughters, there is a higher chance of producing a son in their 6th child to be. But in reality, no matter how many daughters or son a couple is able to produce, the probability of having a son or daughter in their next child will always be 50%. This is one of the reason perhaps why our world is over populated already.

In the case of gamblers, if there are 32 cards to be drawn, the chance of getting the ace or the card with higher value will always be 1/32, similar with a dice. Every time the dice is rolled, the chance of getting the number 6 is always 1/6. Even though we rolled the dice a million times, the probability will never change. No matter how we draw the cards a thousand times, the probability will always be the same. So most gamblers lose their money so much for a night in a casino, because they are not aware about this principle.

Filipinos go crazy with LOTTO tickets, even my friends and relatives, no matter how I discouraged them, they won’t listen. Ever since, I am never encouraged to indulged my self in those things because I am very much aware that my chance of hitting the jackpot is very- very small. It is just a waste of money, isn’t it?

Truly we may never know what the future may bring. But I do believe that things happen not only by chance, things happen due to the choices that we have in our life. The world is a stage and we are the puppets on our own show. Some are able to maintain their fame and some are not. A person may ruin their life due to ignorance and Ignorance is never an exemption to a certain rule. If people are only aware of the basic principle of science and mathematics, our world will never be in chaos!

Papers and pen would have no meaning

Pages of books would remain untouched

Rooms were haven of deafening silence

A hollow cave of empty dusty chairs

What would life be without learning?

No words to utter or feelings to be shared

Clay remains clay in a creative world

Crippled dancers of a famous ballet show

A magic wand in a fairy tale story

Exist in a pure humble soul

Changing the monotonous world

A hero in his own simple way

Good deed remain in memories

Loving words will always linger

Lessons in life will be treasured

What they are now

is what he made them
